Beloit, Wisconsin, is about to make history by celebrating the commissioning of the USS Beloit (LCS-29), a Freedom-class littoral combat ship in the United States Navy. This remarkable vessel honors Beloit's significant contributions to the Navy, particularly the role of the Fairbanks Morse plant, which has supplied engines for naval ships, including the USS Beloit itself. The vessel represents more than advanced naval technology—it symbolizes the enduring bond between Beloit and the U.S. Navy. As the first commissioned naval ship named after Beloit, it offers a unique source of pride for the community and the nation.

The USS Beloit: A Powerful Addition to the U.S. Navy

The USS Beloit is a cutting-edge warship designed for versatile operations in near-shore (littoral) environments. With its impressive specifications, the ship is set to become a critical asset in U.S. naval operations.

Accommodating a core crew of 50 sailors with room for up to 98, the USS Beloit features cutting-edge mission systems, including the advanced COMBATSS-21 combat management system. Its formidable defense systems, equipped with the TRS-4D Air Search Radar and the SeaRAM self-defense suite, position it as a stalwart guardian of the nation’s maritime interests. Furthermore, the ship is fully prepared for a range of combat and surveillance operations, with hangar space for two MH-60 helicopters or a combination of one helicopter and an uncrewed aerial vehicle (MQ-8 Firescout).

Recap of the Community and Crew Picnic: A Day to Remember

On September 21, 2024, the USS Beloit Commissioning Committee hosted a spectacular Community and Crew Picnic at ABC Supply Stadium in Beloit. The picnic drew a crowd of around 400 residents eager to celebrate the USS Beloit and its crew. Despite the scorching 91-degree heat, camaraderie and excitement filled the air.

The event featured an array of family-friendly activities and games. Attendees enjoyed kickball, bags, and yard games, and Kubb. The younger participants were delighted by activities like the bounce house, face painting, and glitter tattoos, while many gathered around the dunk tank, adding a splash of fun to the afternoon.

The crew of the USS Beloit made a grand entrance, arriving with a police escort from the Beloit Police Department. The local community warmly welcomed the 40 crew members in attendance, creating a palpable sense of connection and pride between residents and the sailors.

A touching highlight of the day came when the USS Beloit crew presented the city with a gift—the first American Flag flown on the ship. This gesture symbolized the deep connection between the community and the sailors who will serve aboard the USS Beloit. It underscored the significance of the ship's commissioning and the shared pride in its future service.

Free lunch and beverages were provided throughout the event to beat the heat, with attendees cooling off with ice cream, popsicles, and other cold treats. Thanks to the generosity of Geronimo Hospitality Group and the USS Beloit Commissioning Committee, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal.
