The countdown to Christmas and the gift giving season has begun. And over the next few weeks, we’ll all be hearing the words “shop local” at least a dozen times.

But while shopping locally sounds good, will it really make a difference in Beloit this Holiday Season?

The Heartbeat of Beloit’s Economy

The U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy has noted that small businesses are the backbone of Wisconsin’s economy. They account for 99.4% of all businesses in the state, employing nearly half of our workers.

In Greater Beloit alone, small businesses represent over 88% of all employers.

They’re so vital that the City of Beloit City Council issued a special proclamation designating Saturday, November 29, 2025 as “Small Business Saturday” in the City of Beloit.

“Small businesses are the heart and heartbeat of Beloit’s economy, bringing energy,
creativity, and opportunity to our neighborhoods and downtown. These locally owned shops, restaurants, and service providers create welcoming spaces where residents connect, visitors discover our community’s charm, and dreams of entrepreneurship become reality,” it reads.

The Power of Small Businesses in Beloit

Did you know that for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, a whopping $73 remains in that community?

Compare that to the $43 that remains when purchasing from a corporate chain. When multiplied over and over, that $30 difference has a massive impact.

Each of those dollars support Greater Beloit with increased tax revenue, which helps us improve our services and infrastructure while also providing jobs for people. The result? A higher standard of living for everyone to enjoy.

Our Businesses Support Our Community

It’s been noted that independent locally-owned businesses recirculate 48% of their revenue locally compared to 13% by corporate chains.

So, what does that mean for Beloit? When we buy local, we increase the demand for local goods and services. When that happens, wages, profits, and jobs also get a boost.

Dollar for dollar, when you shop local, you support economic growth, job creation, and one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops that add a vibrant dimension to our community.
