BELOIT — Beloit College, the state’s oldest continuously operating institute of higher learning, welcomed its largest incoming class of students in 10 years this week.

On Wednesday, domestic students could begin moving onto campus in preparation for the first day of class on Monday, Aug. 24. This fall, the college is welcoming 340 new students. That number includes 297 freshmen and 43 transfer students. It’s the first time that number has topped 300 since the 2021-2022 incoming class of 308, which included a large number of kids who’d delayed college for a year because of COVID. And it’s the most since the 2017-2018 academic year when Beloit College had an incoming class of 356.

“I got here in March of 2024, and we’ve worked really hard to beef up the back end of our operations so our recruiting staff could spend more time actually getting to know prospective students,” said Karen Schedin, vice president of enrollment management. “Some of it is (artificial intelligence) such as adding a chat bot, but the goal was to not have staff collecting transcripts and instead having them making personal connections so that the students know how much we want them here.”
